At present, his research is concentrated in Nijmegen; in Utrecht his work focuses on the Atlas of Clinical Fungi, the world standard for diagnostic medical mycology. Research focus on black yeasts concerns the order Chaetothyriales, where aim is to understand the ‘dual ecology’ of the family Herpotrichiellaceae: fungi that can be used for bioremediation of toxic monoaromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX: benzene, toluene and others), while the fungi are also frequently encountered as agents of severe opportunistic mycoses.
