Katja Sterflinger has gained expertise during the last 20 years in the investigation of black fungal communities in extreme and moderate environments. Also, the studies on multiple stress factors and temperature and desiccation tolerance of black fungi were published by her. She has been working extensively on the development, optimization and application of techniques for the study of the meristematic fungi and black yeasts. Katja Sterflinger is the head of the BOKU-VIBT Extremophile Center which was founded in 2012: the research focus of the center is the stress resistance and virulence of black yeasts and microcolonial fungi.
