|
The scope of her studies kept changing over the years: starting with (i) biodiversity and isolation of rock-inhabiting black fungi from deteriorated marble monuments in Crimea and Russia, over to discovery of (ii) survival-ensuring secondary metabolites (i.e. mycosporines and carotenoids) of rock-inhabiting fungi as well as (iii) symbiotic capacities of rock-inhabiting fungi to the present focus on (iv) genetics and model biofilm-based investigations for mechanistic studies. Her research focuses on understanding the geochemical and molecular mechanisms by which microorganisms, especially fungi, succeed in colonisation and alteration of air-exposed material surfaces. Presently genetic manipulation of Knufia petricola (Chaetothyriales) strain A95 builds a new focus of my lab in the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM).
